Spicer Paul Lovejoy (1856 - 1912, age 56) was the secondary antagonist of James Cameron's Titanic. He was Caledon Hockley's right-hand man, assistant and bodyguard. He carries a Colt M1911.45 with distinctive engravings. His height was 6'2" (1.88 m). He was portrayed by David Warner.
He was a former Pinkerton detective and a former cop hired by Cal's father Nathan Hockley to take care of him. He displays his detective skills by questioning Jack about his untied shoes and jacket, how he had time for that while saving Rose DeWitt Bukater from falling. He does show that he can be a gentleman by giving a cigarette to Jack when the latter whistles at him.
On Saturday the 13th, they are singing in the Dining Saloon, and Jack tries to speak to Rose, but two stewards stop him, saying he does not belong there. Lovejoy has noticed it and comes through the door, and Jack thinks he can count on Lovejoy to grant him entrance. Spicer says it won't be neccesary for him to enter and reminds him he's a Third Class passenger. He is willing to pay Jack 10 pounds for his service, but the latter reclines the offer, so he splits it between the two stewards and employs them to guide Jack away.
On April the 14th, Caledon misses Rose, and he sends his servant to go look for her. A very steamy scene takes place in Rose's cabin, and just after finishing, Spicer is at her door. They hear the knocking, and they flee through the other rooms of the Parlour Suite. Spicer hears it, and walks toward the other doors. Soon he sees them walk through the hallway and starts chasing after Jack and Rose as they run downstairs, to take the elevator just in time. While descending within the elevator, Rose flips him off. This was likely the moment where he started hating them. The duo leave him behind when they lock themselves in the Boiler Casing chamber before descending the stairs to the Boiler Rooms. At this point Lovejoy must have given up to leave it into the hands of a couple of stewards to continue the search.
Lovejoy asked the Titanic's Master-At-Arms to take Jack into custody in their office on E-Deck. The Master-at-arms was quickly called away by a Crewman because a large mob at the Second Class purser was asking for their jewelry. Jack and Lovejoy were now alone in the Master-At-Arms office. There, knowing that the ship was sinking, and seeing that the E-Deck had been evacuated, he left Jack trapped there, after elbowing him, mocking him with the words "With the complements of Mr. Hockley".
For the most part, Lovejoy is seen looking for Jack and Rose, especially after Cal put his coat (with the Heart of the Ocean in its pocket) on Rose. Cal took Lovejoy's gun and started shooting at them until his bullets were wasted. Cal gave it back to Lovejoy saying that the diamond would be his.
In a deleted scene, Lovejoy then loads the gun and goes hunting for them in the Dining Room. He is looking for them in the Dining Room. While the water fills the room ever more quicker, they're not able to go through the locked doors, and are forced to hide behind a few tables that start to float as the water rises. Lovejoy is aware that they're still there and lets them know, he challenges them to come out, and that prolonging this game of hide and seek is pointless. Rose is on her knees but she cannot control her nerves and makes a splashing noise. This leads the former detective to finding her and he has her at gunpoint.
"I've been looking for you, miss". But Jack stands by and charges at him, and catches him off guard by landing a few hits on him while the pistol goes off. Wrestling and both rolling over a table. Lovejoy responds with getting up first and pushing Jack into the water, exclaiming: "You little shit." He then goes for a quick right hook but Jack dodges him and crushes a glass window with Spicer's head and gutpunches him, giving him the same delivery he received from Lovejoy earlier when he was handcuffed. "With complements of the Chippewa Falls DAWSONS". Then the pair runs away just in time, Jack giving the heavy doors a shoulder push, before Spicer is able to pick up his gun and shoot them. He thinks the pair has taken the upper stair case but they are hiding one stairwell down below the pantry. This was not seen in the edited version, leaving the audience to think they were hiding there still form Cal, and also the reason Lovejoy's head is bleeding later unexplained. He is last seen at the point just in front of where the Titanic is breaking in half, though he holds on firmly but with eyes wide open, it can be presumed he fell into the crack off-screen after the break or was lowered into the Atlantic by the raising ship.
