Sigrid Lindström was a Swedish First Class passenger on the Titanic.

Early life[]

Sigrid Posse was born on December 18, 1856 in Ängelholm as a countess and the third of 4 children. She had two brothers, one older and one younger and an older sister. Their names were: Christer Posse; Ebba Posse en Arvid Posse.

She was from a family with polticial and miliarty background. In addition to being a count, her father Knut Posse was also a major. Her uncle Arvid Posse had been Sweden's Prime Minister from 1880-1883. Her mother was Louisa Aminoff.

Sigrid was baptized a short while later.

Sigrid's mother died as early as 1880 after suffering from epilepsy for several years. Brother Christer was apparently a bit of an adventurer, and in 1883 he went down to Africa to accompany one of the famous Stanley expeditions. Unfortunately, he died there in 1886, aged just 27, and was buried there.

On 24 July 1888, Sigrid married Carl Johan Lindström, the former captain of the Life Grenadiers. The wedding was in in Ängelholm. the former captain of the Life Grenadiers. They moved to Stockholm to live there. The pair had three daughters. The first, Sigrid Sütterlin, was born on 23 augustus 1889, followed by Ebba Linström on 07 augustus 1892 and on 25 oktober 1894 their youngest sister Mary Ewerlöf was conceived.

Just over two years later, in October 1900, Sigrid's father also died.

On October 28, 1911, Sigrid arrived at Ellis Island, New York on the ship SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria which departed from Hamburg and stopped at least in Southampton before crossing the Atlantic. Sigrid apparently boarded in Hamburg. According to the passenger list, it is her first visit to America and she is on her way to a daughter, Mrs. Sit...er. (hard to find) at the Savoy Hotel, 5 Ave, New York. She is not an immigrant, has paid for the trip herself and owns at least $25.

Titanic[]

After the visit to America, she returned to Europe, but soon decided to cross the ocean again. Sigrid had been in Paris before traveling over to a sister, a certain Mrs. Norbert in New York, and boarded the RMS Titanic at Cherbourg. Who this Mrs. Norbert might be is unsure. She had only one legitimate sister, Ebba who was married to Captain Dreilich, so it could possibly have been a half-sister added by one or other of the parents' slips. Alternatively, it was simply a sister of Sigrid's husband. At least in the past, it was common to call one's spouse's siblings one's own.

On board Titanic, she got acquainted with Erik Lind and Mauritz Håkan Björnström-Steffanson.

The ship had a collision with an iceberg on the late night of April 14.

Mr Lind. and Mr. Björnström-Steffanson helped her get into lifeboat 6 after it became clear that the ship was sinking. She survived the disaster, and so did on of her helpers, Mauritz, who later jumped in Collapsbile D, as well as his friend Hugh Woolner, however Erik Lind failed to make the jump, and died in the icey waters.

Following the distaster, she sued the White Star Line for compensation for the possessions lost, which was about 6000 francs in clothes and linen.

Later life[]

Her husband Carl Johan died on 6 March 1917. The couple is said to have had daughters living in both England and the USA.

On 3 November 1946 in Lidingö, Sigrid Lindström passed away at the age of 89. She was laid to rest with her husband in a grave in Stockholm's Northern Cemetry, but it disappeared in 1969.
